Worst textbook ever

I found this book to be one of the most poorly written and organized textbooks ever. Much of the information is repeated over and over again. For example, a key idea in Chapter 2 would be repeated almost verbatim in a later chapter. Also, the author/editor like to include charts and the many websites of the various admistrative agencies. The problem is that they don't just give you the website, they give you an entire picture of the website which would be placed in the middle of certain paragraphs within a section AND the website pictures could take up several pages. Next, the subheadings in the chapters were not well organized nor was the actual text well written. Key ideas did not flow well to the next key idea. Instead, they were scattered randomly throughout the chapter. All in all, I did not learn anything new from this book that I couldn't just find on my own by googling.

One of the Poorest Textbooks I Have Used

As a paralegal instructor and department chair in the paralegal department of National College, I have used and reviewed many textbooks. This is the worst one I have seen. The organization is terrible. There is no logical order from one topic the next, just random ponderings about a variety of administrative agencies without an explanation of how those thoughts fit into the outline/topic addressed on a page. A series of advanced materials at the end of each chapter appears to have no relevance to the chapter. Typos are frequent (although not nearly as many as in the previous edition). Additionally the topics discussed are not covered completely--many administrative safeguards and procedures are neglected. So when using this text in class, I have to tell the students what to add to the charts and lists. Also the charts are very poorly designed and nearly impossible to follow.

Wrong edition

This book was the wrong edition. I needed edition 4, but this is edition 3. No where on the item discription does it say what edition it is and it has the same ISBN number as the fourth edition. But, for the price it's not a big deal and I did end up using it.

I really love the CrunchTime series, it has saved my butt several times so far in law school. The Criminal Procedure book is one of the more helpful editions because of the nature of the topic; code and enumerated laws.

Gets the job done

The capsule summary does a decent job covering the black-letter law. There is also a lot of short-answer questions, which matches my professor's exam style perfectly. Yet there are a couple of lengthy questions that may suit your needs if that's what you need practice in. Thus, if Terry stops and exigent circumstances are areas that you need review in, this book does an excellent job.

However, I would only use this book in conjunction with your text book and notes while outlining. The capsule summary does a good job giving you the law, but your case book will likely have diferrent cases and angles at viewing the various doctrines, so don't use this alone!

Great choice for Real Estate Law class but too $$$

Good book. Very helpful with excellent problems for the students to work through on their own and review in class.
The book is very clear and doesn't use cases from the days of yore. All modern cases, plain-language English, good exercises.
Very practical. Real Estate professors should use this book. The only problem is that it is insanely expensive. Shouldn't cost so much given that it is not a typical law school tome.

For a law school book, not a bad read

It's hard to ever find a law student that says they "Love" their book, since we are forced to buy/read it. However, this book is pretty great as far as legal texts go. It isn't boring, presents hypothetical problems that spark great class discussions and gives you relevant, practical cases (from the last decade too). It helps to enjoy the topic of real estate transactions too. Obviously a student in securities regulations might have a different opinion. Anyway, for what it's worth, the authors did a great job with this one.

Used this book in my Real Estate Transactions class. It was a very easy read. Material made sense and was not as dry as expected. : ) Only the first chapter was somewhat boring. Brushes up on your property knowledge and provides a great overview of how a real estate market works including the role of lawyers in the process. Use with the following item to study for the final. Emanuel Law Outlines Real Estate Both are written by same authors which is always a plus.

Only game in town...

Unfortunately, this book is the pretty much the only game in town for a law school class on financial institutions. It covers the theoretical subject matter well, but falls short as a practical guide. The book is also heavily tilted toward the national banking system. More information on state banks would be much appreciated. Finally, despite being only a few years old, several sections feel rather dated. I hope the authors think seriously about the implications of the current financial crisis and update the next edition accordingly.

Great way to jump start your MBE study

This book provides a strategic way to take MBE questions with an intro of what topics are tested within each subject and then an exam tactics section of what to look for in the questions. Then there are detailed answers for each question so you can look to see why the wrong answers are not correct. I would recommend this to anyone preparing for the Bar Exam, my bar study professor recommended to begin using this book our last semester of school before we actually began heavily studying for the exam, it was good advice!

A Must-Have

Contrary to what another reviewer said, this book doesn't have two full-length exams, or at least not the edition I have (2005). It has the AM and PM sections of a full-length exam.

Other reviews also mention the tips in this book, but the real value in this book is all the actual MBE questions from past exams as well as the explanation to those questions (including the full-length exam). I have found that the barbri and PMBR questions and answer choices are noticeably different much of the time from these past questions and their answer choices. Both companies make their questions long, and barbri's are unnecessarily long. But most actual questions are short. Barbri's explanations are also long and repetitive, whereas the explanations in this book are more concise. Most importantly, these questions are harder than the ones you're doing from barbri and even PMBR. Even the majority of the questions in the one barbri book that has past MBE questions in it are easier in comparison. If you can understand the questions/explanations in this book, you will be prepared for the bar.

As for the tips, I have found around two or three extremely valuable ones in each section that I've read so far. This is not to say the majority of the tips/writing in the book is helpful or that you can use this book without barbri/subject outlines. But the helpful tips that I got out of this book are ones that barbri doesn't spell out and I wouldn't have figured out on my own. Those tips alone really will raise your score, because you will get at least a few more questions right in every single subject from them.

I agree that this book is pricey, but if you can find a cheaper copy somewhere then that's your best bet because you need this book.

GET THIS BOOK

I bought this around 3 weeks before NY exam (July 2010), the sample MBE in the book felt similar in difficulty and timing to the real thing. (which was NOT my experience with BarBri.) The reviews of the subjects are concise and easily digestable and I found the pointers/tips in the introduction really helpful throughout the exam. Just wish I'd gotten my hands on this book earlier in the game.

Waste of time

Wow, what a waste of time, money, and paper. I bought this book with great hesitancy because my legal writing professor required it. I read the first chapter and fell asleep. I don't know about you, but I don't think there is anything more boring and less productive than reading about writing. Just write and ask questions as you go. Anyhow, I pulled at A- on my paper without reading this book, so take that for what you will.
