Good Case Book

I am a 1L so my experience with case books is limited but this is the best case book that I have used yet. I really echo the sentiment that this book is really great for outlining as the notes contain a lot of policy points on each issue. I don't know how other law schools teach crim law but I find that this book's reflection on international criminal law is really interesting and makes for a nice break from the Model Penal Code. The book also dealt with sensitive topics like rape and assisted suicide gracefully. I'm not sure if I would recommend this book for light reading (this was obviously a required book for my crim law class) but if you were assigned this case book, you lucked out. Also, every case book that I order from amazon comes promptly but be realistic about your needs. Most law school classes request that you do reading for the first day so order with enough time to accomplish those assignments.

This case book is simply invaluable. It is loaded with lots of interesting cases. EAch case is broken down and carefully, yet thoroughly analyzed. This is a great tool for helping the reader understand the full extent of proceedings as well as court rulings. The information in each case is dissected and terms are defined so that each step of each proceeding is completely understood. This is a great book for those who are contemplating a career in the field, as well as those who have years of experience.

Simplifies an inherently complex class

This book was the only reason I got through Civ Pro. It takes the complex concepts and breaks them up into bite-sized examples and questions for which there are thorough explanations. I highly recommend all the E&E books because they clarify, in my experience, all concepts and make the subject understandable. Additionally if you read this before you actually cover the particular concept in class you always look like you have a firm grasp on the subject, which may or may not be the truth.

A Must Buy for Constitutional Law Students

This book is the best study guide for Constitutional Law that I have read. It is written in narrative form, as opposed to outline form. The explanations of cases are clear and concise and reflect the nuances of the lenthy cases in this area where single-paragraph statements in outlines cannot. More importantly, the authors are well regarded constitutional law professors whose evaluations of the cases can be trusted to be accurate as well as even-handed.

Normally, I recommend Examples & Explanation series over any of the other commerical outlines out there. I was very disappointed with both Constitutional Law books however. The examples are unhelpful, especially when a lot of the answers depend on material you won't learn for several chapters! Some of the text is useful but much of it is the authors biased view of what cases mean or should mean. This isn't helpful if you are not taking the class from them!
Overall, I was extremely disappointed in these two books. Not worth the money.

An Excellent Book on Trial Evidence

This book gives an in-depth look at the evidentiary issues that arise during a trial. Do you want to know what the law is regarding how to qualify experts, what the law is regarding how to get business records admitted into evidence, or the rules for direct examination? This book has the answers.

For example, there is a chapter on direct examination which discusses what you should do if you are trying to elicit testimony that might be hearsay and therefore impermissible. Mauet walks you through the most relevant exceptions to the hearsay rule: excited utterance, present sense impression, statements for medical diagnosis and so on.

For the section on how to elicit statements made for the purpose of medical diagnosis under the hearsay exception, Mauet states the law with citations to the Federal Rules of Evidence, explains the law, and then provides three examples how attorneys commonly get the desired statement into evidence at trial. His explanations are clear and thorough. This is an excellent trial evidence textbook for law students and lawyers alike.

Fabulous help for a practical understanding of the FRE

Unlike every other tome on evidence that I've encountered, this one is
organized to discuss the rules as they commonly arise during a trial.

Succinct and clear as a bell.

I wouldn't want this to be my first look at the rules of evidence, because
they're not addressed in any sort of sequential categorical scheme, the way
you find them in the statutes. And the value may not be apparent until you've
had enough experience in the courtroom to appreciate this format. But if you
have that background, the discussion and examples here crystalize the issues
and options wonderfully.

Should be on every trial lawyer's shelf, and I may start bringing it with me
to court.
