Double misery...

I absolutely agree with the other reviewer. This book definitely makes you lose interest in Human Rights subject. It is extremely hard to read, and does not follow any logical connection. It is a collection of human right instruments, barely any caselaw, and the font is hard to read. It's a double whammy for me because one of the authors was my professor. Trust me, the lectures are no better than the book - all over the place and disconnected. Never again!

I hope your professor never makes you purchase this book. It is full of excerpts loosely gathered up without rhyme or reason. It takes a lot to make an entire class room loose interest in "international human rights," but it happened!

Vindicating the Text

I am a former student of the late Professor Lillich. He taught from an earlier version of this text. I found the formulation of the text, and the contents, to be well-done and interesting. Indeed, my deep interest in International Human Rights Law developed through this text. I cannot account for the tones of the other reviewers -- I can only state that I continue to hold my circa 1994 copy of the book.

For the sake of total disclosure, I was but another student of Lillich -- not an aide nor a colleague. I was reviewing over the texts presently offered in the field and was stunned by the two, low reviews. Both Lillich and this book deserve better.

Great clarification for pretty awful casebook

Franklin's Torts is an AWFUL casebook, which is part of what makes this set of briefs so useful. It takes the run-on cases from the main text and breaks them down into salient points. While you'll still need to read the actual cases for details and the notes to understand why many of them are terrible examples of the actual legal standard in most jurisdictions, this book is good for quick recall in class and studying for exams.

Most Confusing Casebook that I used as a 1L

Yeazell's casebook gets off to a good start with a very well written intro, but after that it is obvious that the first chapter was the only chapter in the book that Yeazell put any effort into. As other reviewers have stated the cases have been edited quite poorly, the Erie doctrine section confuses, more than it helps and the overall flow of the textbook is poor. Also the note sections, which usually serve to help students make sense of the case that was just read, are more often than not filed with unhelpful questions with no guidance on how to answer them or what the answer would be.

I ended up buying the Hornbook by West and that easily became the text that I used (along with the Fed Rules book) to understand Civ Pro.

I fell sorry for you if you have to use this book.

Good Case Book

I am a 1L so my experience with case books is limited but this is the best case book that I have used yet. I really echo the sentiment that this book is really great for outlining as the notes contain a lot of policy points on each issue. I don't know how other law schools teach crim law but I find that this book's reflection on international criminal law is really interesting and makes for a nice break from the Model Penal Code. The book also dealt with sensitive topics like rape and assisted suicide gracefully. I'm not sure if I would recommend this book for light reading (this was obviously a required book for my crim law class) but if you were assigned this case book, you lucked out. Also, every case book that I order from amazon comes promptly but be realistic about your needs. Most law school classes request that you do reading for the first day so order with enough time to accomplish those assignments.

This case book is simply invaluable. It is loaded with lots of interesting cases. EAch case is broken down and carefully, yet thoroughly analyzed. This is a great tool for helping the reader understand the full extent of proceedings as well as court rulings. The information in each case is dissected and terms are defined so that each step of each proceeding is completely understood. This is a great book for those who are contemplating a career in the field, as well as those who have years of experience.

I found administrative law extremely confusing and this book really helped. By the time I took my exam I felt like I had a good understanding of what I needed to know. Great book! I had the older 2003 version and it was completely sufficient for a 2007 exam.

Necessary

I wasn't usually an examples and explanations kind of guy in law school. I hardly ever used them, or when I did I thought they weren't too helpful. I just made my own outlines.

But for tax, this thing saved my life. Especially if you're using the Bankhead text that goes with it for your class, but even if you're not, since its geared toward code sections.

Basically it just gives you a code section, and then gives examples of how the code works in practice. It makes all the rules easy. I learned everything I needed to take my tax exam in about 12 hours of studying with this book.

Clear and concise, helpful explanations. Great for a general tax course. If you are using the ..., Bankman, et al textbook, this is is MUST. If you are studying business tax (unless home/small business), this is not the book for you. Griffith rocks!!!

Nice supplement...

I am taking a federal income tax course that uses a textbook which consists mainly of court cases.. and written in hard-to-understand "judicial language". We discuss the cases and go over the problem-solving questions at such a fast pace that sometimes I just blindly jot down notes and try to make sense of them afterwards.

This is where the supplementary comes in. The glossary neatly lists the various topics. There are introductions to the important code sections, followed by sample questions and detailed explanations. It helped me understand the more difficult concepts (which wasn't difficult at all) such as 1245/1250 recapture, disaster gain/loss, depreciation, and other calculations. While it does not include most of the court cases from my main textbook, some of the major cases are briefly discussed throughout.

This book is no substitute for class attendance, but it did make studying run smoothly during exam week.
