This book speaks powerfully about the entire legal writing process. There is a definite art and science to crafting legal documents and this book provides the detailed instruction necessary for legal professionals and law students to produce truly outstanding work.
Readers are briefly introduced to the American legal system in terms of government and court history, responsibilities, accountability, and the nature of both common and enacted laws. Then comes the real meat - performing legal research and analysis, making use of available printed and online resources, learning sound legal grammar, and instruction for crafting a variety of professional legal documents that lawyers write most often - legal advice memos, client letters, motion briefs, and appellate briefs.

Great Book that balances substance and policy

After having to research different ADR textbooks, I found that this book gave a great balance of "soft" skills and the law that isn't found in the rest of the books. For those law students who are used to reading incredibly case-heavy texts, this book takes a bit getting used to and seems like there isn't much to it. In fact, the skills taught in the law review articles are what can make the difference between an effective and ineffective mediator.

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE CASEBOOK

If any professor is thinking about getting this book for their ADR or negotiations class, PLEASE THINK TWICE! This is a HORRIBLE casebook with nothing but pure FLUFF and ZERO substance. We have a joke in my ADR class that not even Menkle Meadow read the book it is so unbelievably lacking in substance.

If you want to learn about negotiation just buy a $12 copy of "Getting to Yes". Not only will you have about 80% of what you'll find in the Menkle Meadow book, but you will actually learn something.

However, if you want to get a book to read to your parents to prove to them how horrible law school is, than this is the book for you.

Comprehensive and readable.

There's a lot to like in this book. It's comprehensive and easily the most readable 1500 page book you are ever likely to encounter.
Two substantive criticisms (i) it can be astonishingly opinionated at times. There is a pronounced pro-Bell bias and a dismissive attitude toward regulation and regulators generally. Not every reader will consider that a bad thing, but I found it shrill and annoying. (ii) The book can be very weak and frequently inaccurate when it wanders off the law and into policy analysis. I didn't sense that the authors were particularly knowledgeable about economics or technology and it showed in a poor comprehension of the reasoning behind FCC policy.
I was surprised that another reviewer recommended Benjamin's 'Telecommunications Law and Policy' as an easier introduction. Benjamin et al is an excellent casebook, but Kellogg et al is an easier read. In fact, they are excellent complements as Benjamin provides the more authoritative reference with lots of source materials. Sharon Black's book is an excellent but basic introduction to Telecom Law.
My recommendation. Read Black, then Kellogg, then Benjamin. That's not an order of preference, just the best sequence to peel away the onion of telecom law.

Great introduction to telecom issues

This is a comprehensive introduction to all sorts of telecommunications (mainly telephone regulation) issues. It's probably a bit much for the novice; something like Stuart Benjamin's Telecommunications Law and Policy is probably a better match there. But, if you want all the details, this is definitely the place to go.

Perfect primer for K Street telecom associates.

There isn't anything else like this on the market. It contains all the FCC and court and DOJ lore on telecom from the beginning of the century through the 1996 Act up to the present. The spicy bits apparently were written by pundit Peter Huber (who isn't identified in the listing above).

I was told there was a mistake in inventory number, thus when I purchased this book, actually it was out of stock. And then Amazon told me this illusionary book had been shipped.

The seller apologized immediately through amazon refund and refunded in full. But I wish he could notice me by an e-mail or a pop-up window message, then I would not wait in vain for nearly 3 weeks and had to borrow it from the library every 2 hours.

clear & comprehensive

This was really helpful for intro to fed tax and corporations. The author provides clear explanations of how various business mechanisms operate and why they are significant in a legal context. Chapter also include some background history, analysis of rules& regs, and discussion of major corporations cases. One of the most worthwhile supplements I've purchased, I highly recommend it for anyone taking business law classes who doesn't have a business/accounting background.

Great for law student not well versed in financial topics

I used this to bone up on the various corporate and financial law topics I needed to know for my Nonprofit Law course and for the bar exam. It is well written and very informative. I wish I had read this book prior to taking Contracts Law my 1L year - would have gotten way more out of that class.

Too barebones for the MPRE

This supplement is about as barebones as you can get. There are no glaring omissions from the material covered, but this supplement simply does not convey as much depth as is necessary for a PR class or the MPRE. I took a PR class, then waited one year before taking the MPRE, and intended on using this book as my primary refresher. It became readily apparent that my plan would need a revision once I started comparing MPRE practice exams to this supplement. The MPRE tests for nuances in the rules--nuances that this book just does not acknowledge, nevermind discuss.

I HIGHLY recommend Crunchtime to anyone and everyone in law school. I would not have passed some of my classes without it.
I used the professional responsibility crunch time for my professional responsibility class and am now using it to study for the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE). It has great explanation and even practice questions. I really like the way the explanations broke down the material into more easily understood topics.

Has Contempt for His Readers

My law professors are all hiding the ball. I am relying on these supplements for the guidance that my professors are intentionally withholding from me during class.

This book is written by a law professor. Apparently, he thinks it appropriate to hide the ball not just from his students but from his readers who are, after all, only seeking to get a "leg up" on their law school competition.

One great example of this author's contempt for his readers was the following question that was actually in the book, or something like it.

It says, "If I sold you a pencil that was worn down to the nub, is it a sale?"

Answer: "Trick question! Technically, nowadays, you cannot wear a pencil down to its nub!" I mean seriously. I paid you $50 for this.

Most of the time, the examples he uses are from the oh so labyrinthine UCC. "Oh, just get out and study your UCC and you should be able to figure this out on your own."

Well, like I'm saying, that's not how this works. I paid you $50 and am reading an unassigned 500 pages for answers. Now, stop with the riddles, Riddler, and play it straight for your students!

Not very useful

I'm not interested in reading this book from cover to cover, but there isn't any other way to get information out of it.

1 - The table of contents doesn't list the chapter subsections, making it hard to figure out what chapter contains the information I want.

2 - No table of cases! Every law reference book should have one - there's no excuse for it being missing.

3 - Pathetic index - only 2 pages long. I almost never found what I was looking for.

If you are interested in reading the entire book front to back, it might be useful. If you want to read a bit at a time to supplement your casebook as you go through the semester, you will be frustrated.

It's okay but frustrating at times

This E&E provides good, clear discussions of UCC Article 2 provisions. It would be a five-star product if it wern't for one fundamental problem:

The answers are long, rambly, and not very straightforward. Most of the examples call for short answers, usually a "yes" or a "no." For an explanation, you get about a page-and-a-half of reasoning and NO CLEAR ANSWER so you have no idea if you're right or wrong.

That defeats the purpose of getting an E&E in the first place.

However, the discussions that precede the questions are quite clear and useful, and that's what saves this book from getting only two stars.

I see there is a new version coming out in March 2009. I hope that this will be improved in the new version.
