Mauet's Trial Technique is the classic textbook for trial courses in law schools around the country. It works just as well as a reference book for trial. It takes one through every step of trial, assuming the reader knows nothing about procedure. For example, not only does it teach how to lay a foundation for an exhibit with a witness, it tells you who to give the exhibit to to have it marked (the court clerk). This is not for advanced trial lawyers but is a good textbook for beginners and a solid reference for lawyers who only occassionally go to trial.

A classic, but there are better books on trial techniques out there

Mauet's book has been around for a long time and it's beginning to show its age. The new edition sticks with the same format and doesn't add much new material. It offers solid advice that hardly anyone would disagree with, but in fact that's one of its flaws: it just doesn't push the envelope. For example, it tries to teach trial skills by looking only at hypothetical situations and fictional characters. Why use fiction when real life is so much more interesting and instructive? Why not use real court cases and learn from the mistakes and successes of lawyers we all know about?

My favorite trial techniques book right now is Winning at Trial, written by a current US Attorney (D. Shane Read). The author not only knows what he's talking about (you get the same solid advice as with Mauet), but the book also comes with two DVDs with over 4 hours of video from televised trials (including the O.J. trial), as well as numerous transcripts from actual trials. For students, your professor is probably going to stick with whatever text they're currently using, but I would recommend Read's book as a complement to give you a better idea of what really good (and not so good) trial attorneys do in actual trials.

This new edition is the same as the previous edition, down the the index and page limit. Everything is exactly the same, with some different fact pattersn for examples. Don't buy this book, buy the previous edition used, no changes.

I bought this book used, and I received in very good condition with very little highlighting toward the back. I was very happy with this purchase.. and my wallet was especially happy. The book was torn.

The front cover was torn from the trunk of the book. There were two dents on the front cover. I was very disappointed as I had to pay over $38 for this book. Among all the books which I purchased on AMZN, this was the worst.

I don't recommend buying casebooks!

Get a Gilbert's Law Summary on the subject and a Case Brief Book.

If they do not have a Case Brief Book keyed to the casebook that you are supposed to buy, just buy any of them that you like because if the case is important enough - and shouldn't it be? - it will be in all of the Case Brief Books.

If the case is that important, it is also on Wikipedia!

Don't waste money on casebooks! Buy the Gilbert's and a Case Brief Book.

What's the point of the MC at the end of every chapter if a) you cannot find the correct answer and b) your prof doesn't give them to you?? What's the point? Save the room and make the book thinner and easier to drag around with all the other law books you have to schlep around campus.

Don't Fail to Read This Book

This book is a perfect companion book to a trial advocacy textbook. The book takes the student/lawyer from the beginning of a case through the moment just before trial. There is a lot of material to cover and Mauet does so very effectively. As an aside, I am amazed by how clear his table of contents reads. The table does not just contain subject headings but is an excellent outline for anyone to refer to in their practice.

Mauet provides not only a wonderful overview of all the things a lawyer needs to consider in litigating a case but also provides practical tips such as how to conduct discovery on a limited budget. If you are a young lawyer, Mauet answers questions you may be afraid to ask such as "How do I start the deposition?" Believe it or not, something so basic is not covered in law school, but Mauet provides the answers here.

All of the stuff that would make "Boston Legal" boring.

A masterpiece in its time, "Boston Legal" follows the antics of trial attorneys Alan Shore and Denny Crane. Each week (or, at the least, each good week), one or both find themselves suing or defending some timely issue in unique circumstances. Clients who enter the law offices of Crane, Poole & Schmidt on a Monday tend to have resolution by the following Friday, as Alan and Denny tend to waive a great deal of legal business. Witnesses are grilled, eloquent closings are given, and the show closes with the pair enjoying fine Scotch and cigars on the balcony.

This book covers all of that waived material that would make the show terribly boring.

Thus, this book is terribly boring.

Highly recommended.
